Katie Lindsey Affect My Brain -photography-

Artist Statement
One of the main reasons why I wish to produce works of art using a camera is because it has the power to capture a moment in time. Your memory can only do so well to remember what happened at a very specific moment, and thats where a camera comes in. A photograph can affect so many emotions, and bring back smells, and sounds, more vividly than you memory ever could. I enjoy going out and just seeing what comes across my path, because these turn out to be some of the best prints. One photographer who really inspired me with this idea of capturing the moment was Henri Cartier-Bresson. However, to Cartier it's not only about capturing the moment but it is "le moment decisif", the decisive moment that expresses the essence of a situation. I hope to one day have good enough judgment to be able to do just as Bresson was able to do and decide that exact moment to shoot the picture. However, going along with this type of style of photography, I am also inspired by Dorothea Lange. Lange had this to say, "Hands off, I do not molest what I photograph, I do not meddle and I do not arrange" In most of my work I find this true as well. Not all the time but most of the time, I don't not like arranged photographs and prefer what was already there to make a beautiful photo from. I find it slightly more challenging to go out and find that perfect shot at that precise moment, or find some old house down a road I had never been too. However, I do believe that once you began to get to comfortable with what you are doing you need to change what you are doing and experiment with something else. And that is where I am now, trying to decide where to go with the work I have now, and what direction I wish to take next.
